Acer Aspire V5 notebooks get Ivy Bridge treatment, shipping by end of June for $630 and up

Acer Aspire V5 notebooks get Ivy Bridge treatment, shipping by end of June for $630 and up
While many laptop makers held off on product refreshes - not to mention new notebook lines - till Intel's Ivy Bridge CPUs were ready, Acer went ahead and released its Aspire V5 series back in March. Still, that doesn't mean the company can't squeeze in some new models a few months later, and indeed it just trotted out two Ivy Bridge Aspire V5 notebooks. The 14-inch version measures 0.79 inches thick and weighs 4.6 pounds, while the 15-incher measures 0.83 inches and tips in at five pounds. Both laptops have optical drives and 500GB of storage, and like the V5s announced in March they feature Acer Instant Connect for finding and saving frequently used WiFi networks. Both machines have Intel HD Graphics 4000 and 500GB of storage space. You get your choice of Core i3 or Core i5 processors, with pricing starting at $630. Acer says the notebooks will be available by the end of June.

Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M5

Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M5 hands-on (video)
Acer's Aspire Timeline Ultra M5 laptops are hardly a mystery - they've already been announced for the UK - but until now we haven't had the chance to handle one in person. Luckily for us, then, both the 14- and 15-inch models are on display here at Computex, right alongside the similar M3 Ultrabook we reviewed earlier this year. Like the M3, they pack NVIDIA's Kepler-based GeForce GT640M graphics and can be configured with solid-state drives, but the M5's design is decidedly more polished, with a brushed metal finish, narrower bezels and backlit keyboards. Nonetheless, some things haven't changed: the keyboard layout is the same, as is the 1366 x 768 TN display and thin chassis, which measures around 20mm thick.

Acer announces ‘world's thinnest' 13.3-inch Aspire S5 Ultrabook at CES 2012

Thursday, January 12, 2012

Acer announces ‘world's thinnest' 13.3-inch Aspire S5 Ultrabook at CES 2012
Not surprisingly, Acer's jumping on the quickly-expanding Ultrabook bandwagon here at CES 2012, with the Aspire S5 being the first out of the chute. It's a 13.3-incher that'll check it at under three pounds, offering up Instant On functionality, a magnesium-aluminum alloy cover in Onyx Black.

Adorned with a delicately curved chassis in Onyx Black, the Aspire S5′s cover rim wraps around the system body like a protective shell. A magnesium-aluminum alloy cover and palm rest provide a slimmer and sturdier form, while the metallic brushed detail presents subtle elegance. The clean and ultra-fluid contours seen from all angles make the S5 a vision of beauty.

The Aspire S5 is also Acer's first Ultrabook to feature the new MagicFlip I/O port panel concealed just below the hinge. This design feature enhances the overall slenderness and streamlined form of the S5. When needed, a press of the MagicFlip key opens the panel to reveal a selection of I/O ports: HDMI, USB 3.0 and 10Gbps Thunderbolt. Yes, Thunderbolt port is present here.

We're told that it'll start shipping in Q2 of this year, but other details remain under wraps.
