Google Chrome with Touch UI revealed in pictures

Despite affirmations from Google about how Chrome OS is designed for notebooks (better known as Chromebooks), more evidence that they're taking the operating system into a tablet-friendly market has surfaced. The folks over at Chrome Story stumbled upon a Chrome OS daily build for Tegra 2 devices a week ago (which can't be shared at the moment) and now they've managed to dig up screenshots of the Google Chrome web browser with a touch UI.

At the moment it can't be confirmed if this version of the browser is for Chromebooks or for Android tablets/phones, but what we do know is that Chrome has the ability to work with touchscreen devices. Besides the obvious onscreen keyboard and extra large buttons, it also features support for landscape/portrait rotation - another key function that most smartphone/tablet apps have.

Well until we have an official announcement from Google we won't know for sure. Stay tuned and we'll keep you posted. In the meantime, check out more pictures of Chrome with Touch UI.

Acer Notebook With Detachable Trackpad

Acer's new Aspire Ethos laptops sinks into the faceless morass of PC notebooks, with one notable exception: a detachable trackpad. The humble mouse-replacement pops out of its place below the keyboard and becomes a media remote.

And that's not all. The pads have LEDs embedded beneath the shiny surface so you can read track numbers or can see where to touch to skip tunes, and an accelerometer knows how you are holding it so it can be used in both landscape and portrait orientations.

Otherwise, the only distinction is that the expensive ($1,640+) Ethos line squeezes in the top end of everything, from Blu-ray through a 1920 x 1080 display (with Gorilla Glass) and USB 3 to a NVIDIA GeForce GT500 graphics card. To say these are boring isn't to say they aren't well specced. There's even a monster with an 18.4-inch screen, which is larger than my first TV.

But the making — and possibly the undoing — of the new Ethos line is that remote. You can sit back from that giant screen with a martini and watch your movies in comfort. But if you lose this remote anywhere other than down the back of the sofa, you're pretty much screwed.

What's more, these laptops allow seamless media sharing and enjoyment via clear.fi: clear.fi is Acer's media sharing system based on the idea that it's easier if all multimedia content is simply brought into a single system with a common interface. No matter where they are. clear.fi is a cross-platform solution that works straight out of the box, automatically detecting the clear.fi-enabled devices connected to the wireless home network, and then allowing all digital content stored on any of these to be shared seamlessly using the clear.fi media interface.

The panels employ mercury-free LED backlight technology that not only improves image quality and increases readability in low light conditions but also reduces power consumption

The Aspire Ethos laptops flaunt a total black look with contrasting glossy and matte surfaces that oozes style from every angle. The brushed aluminium-magnesium alloy cover shows off a sophisticated hairline finish. Inside the elegant display is mirrored by the handsome back-lit chiclet keyboard that is easier to work with in low light.

The Acer Ethos series is based on second generation Intel® Core™ i processors, offering dynamic processing power and smart multitasking for music, gaming, videos, movies, photos, social networking and other demanding mainstream applications while consuming less power. The new processors also feature Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 to deliver great media processing for faster video editing and sharing, accelerated web browsing and awesome gaming experience. NVIDIA GeForce GT500 series discrete graphics ensure spectacular image quality that will satisfy even the most demanding gamers, while the USB 3.0 port transfers data to and from external devices 10 times faster than before.

The integrated PowerSmart long life battery ensures prolonged battery performance over a longer period of time. With conventional batteries, power capacity starts to fade after 300 charge cycles. The new battery with long cycle life formula can retain 80% capacity for over 1000 charge cycles: over 3 times more compared to traditional notebook batteries. This also make the Aspire Ethos more environmentally-friendly as fewer battery replacements are needed.

With the new Aspire Ethos you can charge your smartphone or other USB devices without turning on the laptop. As your laptop becomes your charging station you can travel even lighter because there is no longer need to carry along power adapters. Just plug your USB device into the blue USB port and charge. To ensure that your laptop doesn't run out of battery, power-off USB charging is only enabled when above a user-defined battery level.

A generous HDD space meets the needs of multimedia enthusiasts, while on the Aspire Ethos 8951G there is even the possibility to combine a SSD, for superfast booting and application loading, with a big sized HDD for storage purposes. In addition, the Aspire Ethos series features a convenient multi-in-1 card reader that also supports the latest SDXC card format for easy and speedy data transfer across devices.

The Aspire Ethos family integrates state-of-the-art wireless and wired technologies: Wi-Fi® CERTIFIED® network connection supporting Acer SignalUp™ with Nplify™ wireless technology, Bluetooth® 3.0 (optional) and Gigabit LAN. The Acer Video Conference solution, including the Acer Crystal Eye high-def webcam and built-in microphone, lets you keep in touch with your friends or business contacts through high quality video conferences.

The Aspire Ethos series will be available mid June with RRP's from £999 Inc VAT

Samsung Chromebook Teardown Reveals

It's teardown time again, and this time the poor gadget under iFixit's menacing spudger is the Samsung Series 5 3G Chromebook, one of Google's follow-ups to the rather poorly-received Cr-48 Chromebook.

Before we get inside, it's worth mentioning that Samsung has fixed the two big problems with the original. The trackpad now works properly (can it really have been so hard to get right? It's not like trackpads are new tech) and the battery life is now a good long 8 hours. It is also a little faster thanks to its Atom N570 processor, and — according to iFixit CEO Kyle “The Can-Opener” Wiens — looks a lot better. I'm a sucker for clunky, utilitarian design, so I actually prefer the old one.

Then we dive inside the device. It's possible to disassemble the whole thing with the spudger, a plastic opening tool, and a Phillips number 1 screwdriver.

The Series 5 is put together a lot like a vanilla netbook, with standard slot-in parts for things like Wi-Fi and 3G WWAN. The 16GB SanDisk SSD is also a standard plug-in module, so it should be possible to upgrade if you want to. In the pictures above, you can see the insides of both the new Chromebook and the original Cr48 for comparison.

Ifixit gives the Series 5 3G Chromebook a Repairability Score of 6 out of 10. Not bad. Be sure to check out the full teardown, complete with “huge” photographs of each step.

Acer Adds Three Notebooks to Its Aspire TimelineX Line

Acer announced three new notebooks that would add to its Aspire TimelineX line, namely the 3830T, 4830T, and the 5830T. All models possess Dolby Home Theater v4 audio, integrated 3DSonic Stereo speakers, second-gen Intel Core i5 and i3 processors with Turbo Boost, HD Widescreen CineCrystal LED-backlit display with 1366 x 768 resolution, and HDMI 1080p output.

The three notebooks also have a USB 3.0 port for faster file transfers, HD webcam with 1280 x 1024 resolution, built-in digital microphone, WiFi, and Bluetooth.

The differences lie on size and graphics performance. The basic 3830T measures 13.3 inches diagonally and weighs 4.12 pounds, the 4830T has a 14-inch screen and weighs 4.88 pounds, and the advanced 5830T model is 15.6-inch in screen length and weighs 5.6 pounds. The latter two models have integrated DVD drives and even a dedicated numeric keypad.

The notebooks come preloaded with Windows Home 7, Nook for PC, Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Adobe Reader, WildTangent Demo Games, Skype, and Norton Online Backup. It also has Microsoft Office 2010, but online purchase is required before use.

Acer's new Timeline X notebook looks decent

If Acer's current Aspire TimelineX notebooks look a little too dull for your tastes, have a peek at that industrial-looking number in the picture above. The company just redesigned its line of skinny laptops, and refreshed them with Sandy Bridge processors while it was at it. The 13.1-inch 3830T, 14-inch 4830T, and 15.6-inch 5830T all have that two-tone aluminum design (also available in black), along with USB 3.0, a choice of Core i3 and Core i5 CPUs, and Acer's clear.fi software for sharing media among DLNA devices. The 14- and 15.6-inch versions have onboard optical drives and number pads, and, on select models, you can choose a discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT520M or GT540M card. However, the screen resolution is going to be 1366 x 768 regardless of which you pick. The 3830T, 4830T, and 5830T are available now, starting at $799, $699, and $599, respectively, and you can find specs for a handful of models after the break.

Acer Releases New Aspire TimelineX Thin & Light Laptops

The newly designed multimedia-oriented laptops have a simplistic and elegant look, blue cases, chiclet keyboards and larger touchpads than in previous Aspire TimelineX, and around 1 inch thin profiles.

Based on the 2nd Generation Intel Core i3 and i5 processors, the systems feature Intel HD integrated graphics, as well as the Nvidia GeForce GT 540M and 520M discrete video cards in select models with Nvidia Optimus technology.

According to Acer, battery life is up to nine hours on models with integrated graphics and up to eight hours for those with dedicated video cards.

The most obvious difference between the 3830T and its larger siblings – the 4830T and 5830T – is that the latter include built-in optical drives and dedicated numeric pads on their keyboards. Regardless of screen size, all new TimelineX models have a display resolution of 1366×768 pixels.

The laptops incorporate webcams, 3DSonic stereo speakers, Dolby Home Theater audio, HDMI outputs, USB 3.0 technology, Bluetooth in select models, and Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet as standard.

Asus ROG G53SX laptop to have glassless 3D

Monday, June 6, 2011

3D has always been a risky business, and although the cinemas have been bombarded with tons of 3D movies these few years, 3D hasn't really lifted off in the consumer level. We've seen plenty of 3DTVs, and also a few laptops with 3D support (that still need 3D active shuttle glasses), Asus is going the Nintendo 3DS route with their new ROG gaming laptop.

ASUS has a potential answer in the shape of the Republic of Gamers G53SX laptop that's being shown off at Computex right now. It's the world's first glasses-free 3D laptop. If it helps, you can think of it as a giant Nintendo 3DS for playing WOW on.

Externally, it looks the same as previous G-series laptops from ASUS sitting gimp-like in its suit of rubber, with hard angles and giant vents round the back. Under that there's an Intel Core i7 CPU, Z68 motherboard and GeForce 560M graphics chip.

'Regular' 3D gaming roughly halves framerates over 2D gaming on the same system. Assuming glasses-free tech has the same performance hit, that 560M might struggle to drive the 15unch, 1920x1080 screen stereoscopically.

Asus Launching Eee PC Netbooks with Ubuntu, still has the Windows key

Nerdy Ubuntu lovers that dreamt about portable Ubuntu machines shall rejoice, as the Ubuntu Linux OS (10.10) is now available pre-loaded on three Asus Eee PC models including the 1001PXD, the 1011PX and the 1015PX. More models packing Ubuntu will be made available throughout the year.

“The Eee PC with Ubuntu is ideal for consumers and businesses,” the company said. “The hardware is sleek and lightweight and energy efficient while Ubuntu is safe, intuitive and stable. Ubuntu includes a complete office suite making it easy to create documents, spreadsheets and presentations and share them with Microsoft Windows users. A full, rich Internet experience is available with Mozilla Firefox and Adobe Flash pre-installed.”

The ASUS 1001PXD, otherwise known as the ASUS Eee PC Seashell, features a 10.1-inch LED backlight WSVGA non-glare screen, Intel's Atom N455 CPU, 1 or 2 GB of DDR3 memory, and a 160 to 320 GB 5,400RPM HDD. The 1011PX sports a meatier dual-core Intel Atom N570 (or N455) CPU and essentially the same specs as the Seashell, but with dual boot capabilities thrown in. The 1015PX supposedly offers notebook performance in a netbook size seemingly using more of the same but with a larger HDD (up to 500 GB).

Typically all three netbooks ship with Microsoft's Windows 7 Starter OS, but now there's an option to choose the lighter Ubuntu OS instead. “Canonical's Ubuntu Linux is used by more than 20 million people across the world today,” the company added. “It is available to download for free at Ubuntu.com and also ships preloaded with other original equipment manufacturers, including Dell.”

The three ASUS Eee PC models, 1001PXD, 1011PX and 1015PX, is available with Ubuntu 10.10 pre-installed from June 1st 2011 through ASUS sales channels.
